What Ruby IDE do you use, and why?
I've been working on the RDT project for some time now. In fact, nearly two years now. During that time we've pushed out some major releases and seen adoption of the IDE go up by quite a bit. Hey, we even made an IBM Developerworks article.
But I think we can do more. We don't have wizards for creating new classes or scripts, confusing someone new to Ruby or the plugins. We don't have any sort of refactoring yet. We don't offer a standalone version bundled with just the Eclipse components you need so you can just download one thing and get a Ruby IDE (ala RadRails).
What I want to know is: What ruby editor/IDE do you use? Why do you use it? What would get you excited to switch to a new one?
The only editor I see with a large adoption rate is Textmate - and that's being driven by the popularity of Rails and its use by DHH in the Rails videos. Other editors offer shorthand templates and macros, so why is it that users think Textmate is the only one offering it? I've heard many users say they want to buy an Apple just so they can use Textmate for Rails. While I love Apple, I just don't see the logic of buying a $2000 computer and paying $40 for an editor - when there are free open-source editors that can compete on features with it.
So please, let me have it. What shoudl we be focussing on in RDT to make it easier for you to be more productive on your Ruby projects? What about RDT made you cringe, or jump for joy?
